Sea to Summit — Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima
One hour north of Miyajima's famous floating gate, the same city rises into the Nishi-Chugoku highlands. Pray at a thousand-year-old shrine on a sacred island. The next morning, draw a bow in the forest and light a fire with your hands.
Begin the ascentOne city, two worlds
Once the day-trippers board the last ferries, the island belongs to those who stayed. Stone lanterns are lit. You hear only waves and the footfall of deer. A thousand years of prayer, and no one to share it with.
The following day, a thousand metres up. You kneel, you breathe on an ember, and the moment it catches you look up — and someone is watching with you. Here, the mountain is something people do together.
The ascent — one hour, vertical
0 m — Miyajima
Salt in the air, the vermilion gate standing in the sea, a thousand years of worship. This is where the journey starts. Leave the World Heritage shoreline behind; the road turns north.
+30 min — Saiki
Thirty minutes north of the coast lies Saiki: rice terraces, clear streams, cedar shade. Children wade in the shallows while woodsmoke drifts through shafts of light. This valley is also the birthplace of Hiroshima salmon — the Banko Gorge fishing grounds are here.
+60 min — Yoshiwa, 750–1,000 m
Thirty minutes further. At 750 to 1,000 metres, Mominoki Forest Park opens across roughly 400 hectares — named one of Japan's 100 finest forests for shinrin-yoku (forest bathing). Ahead stands Mt. Kanmuri, at 1,339 m the second-highest peak in Hiroshima Prefecture. Launch from a platform 14 metres up a tree, glide 150 metres through the canopy, and the seaside feels like another country.
Raising a bamboo frame — the forest is a playground, and a classroom.
FAQ
About an hour by car: roughly 30 minutes to Saiki, then another 30 minutes up to the highlands at 750–1,000 m.
Dates and capacity are set by each operator. Please contact or book through each operator's own page.
Snow falls on the highlands and the landscape changes. Check each facility's own information for opening and road conditions.
Either order works. The island is at its best from dusk to dawn, while the highlands are about daytime activity, so it helps to plan one night on the island and one day in the mountains.
What makes it adventure
Nature
Old forest, mountain streams, and Hiroshima's second-highest peak. A designated heavy-snowfall zone where the average temperature runs more than 5°C below the city — real mountain weather, an hour from the sea.
Activity
Forest archery. A zipline over 150 metres long. A 6.18 km highland cycling road. Stream fishing in summer, snowfields in winter. The same forest changes its clothes four times a year.
Culture
Hand to hand, person to person. And an hour down the mountain: Miyajima, an island worshipped as a deity itself. Adventure inside a thousand-year-old sacred landscape — that is what makes Hatsukaichi unlike anywhere else.
Adventure tourism is defined as travel combining at least two of three elements: nature, physical activity, and cultural experience (per the ATTA/JNTO definition). Hatsukaichi holds all three within a single hour's drive.
A day in the forest
This is not a day of visiting attractions. It is a day of using your hands, touching fire, and spending hours in the company of others. One hour from a World Heritage island.
Four seasons, one field
Green & autumn
Treetop courses 8 to 14 metres up, ziplines through the canopy, a highland cycling road, and over 100 camping pitches. One of Japan's 100 finest forests for forest bathing becomes, in its entirety, a field of play.
White season
In winter this designated heavy-snowfall zone becomes a white plain. Snowshoeing, snow play, silence. An hour from the mild Seto Inland Sea, you arrive in snow country — a fact most visitors to Hiroshima never learn.
Stay in the highlands
Spend one night on the island; the next, go up. Stars overhead, birdsong at dawn. The lodge sits within the forest itself — open your eyes and you are already in the field.
One night on Miyajima, one or two in Yoshiwa. Sea and mountain, prayer and adventure — a single journey.

For seasoned adventurers
You have hiked the northern wilds and the alpine towns. What is different here is not the forest — it is the doorway. In the morning you stand before a thousand-year-old shrine that floats on the sea. By noon you are a thousand metres up, coaxing a flame out of cedar. At night you sleep in a quiet mountain valley. Sea and summit, prayer and fire, in one itinerary. Only in Hatsukaichi.
First night on the island. Second night in the forest.

Stay on the Island
Once the day-trippers leave, Miyajima belongs to those who stayed. An island worshipped as a deity — cherished, we hope, for a thousand years more. Read the island's side of the story.
